On April 28th, 2008, Steve Marks, managing partner of Baton Rouge personal injury attorneys, Marks and Lear, PLC, was recently notified that he was elected to American Trial Lawyer Association 2007 Top 100 Lawyers in the State of Louisiana.

This award, limited in number as its title indicates, was given after an in depth review of the standing and record of attorneys in each state, based on specific standards of excellence for trial lawyers; i.e. those dedicated to the prosecution of the rights of the injured, disabled, or killed by the negligence of others.

Class Action Settlement: Industrial Toxic Gas Release - Settlement for Citizens of the Town Of Garyville Louisiana

Jay A. Parker, one of the partners with Marks and Lear, PLC, is the principal attorney for over six thousand (6000) citizens in the Garyville, Louisiana area, and he recently concluded a settlement agreement with the Marathon Oil Company for all claims for damages by those citizens which arose out of a chemical release almost a decade ago. The specfic terms of the settlement have not yeet been made public, but nearly all of those then living in the Garyville area at the time of the chemical release from the Marathon Oil Company will participate in the settlement. Various physical ailments, and mental and emotional anguish were alleged to have been caused by the chemical release.

Disbursement of the funds, with settlement compensation amounts to be disbursed according to geographic zones from the site of the release, is expected to be staged through a central community location in the Garyville area during July and August 2008. Air modeling was used to determine the areas of the community that were likely the most significantly impacted by this industrial accident.

While a number of attorneys were involved in the litigation in this incident which occured almost a decade ago, after recently assuming primary responsibility in the case, Jay Parker was able to conclude a settlement agreement in principle and structure a plan for final resolution of the case.
