Recently, a client asked me to recommend a personal injury attorney. She had only one requirement: that the attorney be the complete opposite of me. This initially shocked me, as the client and I have a great working relationship and she has never seemed dissatisfied with my work. Confused, I asked her to explain. She told me I was too pleasant and happy, and unlike most of the attorneys she deals with, in her words, she wanted a pit bull.
Oftentimes many people take for granted how fortunate we are to be able to call ourselves Americans. In fact, when you turn on the news every night or open a newspaper, and whether it be Fox News or MSNBC, we hear stories about how our reign as a superpower is over, how greed is ruining us, how no one wants to come to this country anymore, etc. I understand that negativity sells, but luckily for me, I see things from a unique perspective. Each and every day, I come to work primarily to help people who love this country and who want to be a part of us. It is incredibly refreshing. I have no true adversaries. I appreciate this and am proud in the fact that I have clients who put their dreams in my hands. I love when I take on a marriage case and get to know my clients on a personal level. I recently represented a US Citizen client who was anxiously awaiting his petition to be approved so his fiance could come to America to marry him. Even though I had told him several times the process could take up to eight months, he would nervously call me weekly to inquire regarding the status. When the case was ultimately approved and his fiancee was in America, he thanked me for not only being his attorney, but for also serving as his therapist.
In today’s world, email is becoming our primary form of communication. As prevalent as it becomes, I’ll always revert to the phone to execute my favorite part of my job. As an immigration lawyer, there is no better feeling than hearing the voice of a client after being informed that their case has been approved. So yes, for all the aforementioned reasons, I do tend to give off a pleasant and happy vibe, and I am glad I have clients who are able to acknowledge this.
