According to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, in 2008 there were 720 fatalities in designated highway construction and maintenance work zones, meaning that every ten hours there is a work zone fatality somewhere in America. This statistic may seem shocking; however inattentive drivers combined with often hazardous work zones lead to a more dangerous driving atmosphere and thus a heightened risk of accident.
It is due to common disregard of attention in highway work zones that the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has made the week of April 12 an awareness week for work zone safety. As reported by the Ledger Independent, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has been selecting one week each April for the past several years in order to highlight dangers in work zone areas. Why April? In the words of Kentucky Transportation Cabinet spokesperson Allen Blair “springtime is construction time.”
The California accident lawyers at Blackman Legal Group have been representing workers injured on the highways of California, where the Department of Transportation employs thousands of workers who are working alongside fast-moving traffic, when workers are hit by cars or trucks and seriously injured or killed. While there may be workers compensation claims involved in these cases, those types of actions do not allow for the recovery for pain and suffering, and loss of enjoyment of life. Third party actions brought in the Superior Courts of California are the only way to make such recoveries. Of course, in these cross-over cases involving both Workers Comp and 3rd party liability, the workers comp insurance company will have rights to be reimbursed and to get credit against future benefits. It is always very important to contact the personal injury lawyers immediately after a tragedy.
