A Ford Taurus collided with a light rail in Mount Vernon, MD, Thursday afternoon sending eight train passengers to the hospital, the Baltimore Sun reports. A hospital spokesperson said none of the injuries were considered life threatening. The Maryland Transit Authority (MTA) and city police are investigating the crash.
According to a report by the Phoenix Valley Metro motorists making illegal or improper turns or running red lights are the cause of most collisions between light rail train and motor vehicles. Of these, illegal turns in front of approaching light rail vehicles account for the greatest percentage of total collisions for most light rail systems. The most current data from 1998 indicates that motorists making improper left turns in front of light rail trains caused 47 percent of all light rail–motor vehicle accidents.
