The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has adopted a national “Crashes Aren’t Accidents” campaign. The purpose is to emphasize the significance of safety and responsibility when it comes to driving. Discrediting the popular viewpoint that motor vehicle incidents are unavoidable events, “Crashes Aren’t Accidents” reminds all drivers that whether it’s a fender bender or a serious situation, each minor dent or major crash is preventable and predictable.
To clarify the concept, let’s compare two incidents that could potentially happen at the same moment in the same city during a heavy thunder storm: lightening striking a house and one vehicle smashing into another. The lightening strike would be an unstoppable act of God and, therefore, an accident. In contrast, the laws of physics would have predicted the car collision based upon the speed and direction of both cars, the distance between them, road conditions, etc. From this perspective, the driver(s), who could have avoided the trouble, must assume responsibility.
By sending a “Crashes
Aren’t Accidents” message and redirecting the public’s mindset, the NHTSA aims to
encourage drivers to focus on safety and prevention.
As a personal injury attorney who has repeatedly
seen the devastating impact of careless driving, I applaud this movement. We can all benefit from
being more attuned to our actions, as well as to the maneuvers other drivers make, while we’re
on the road.
