Virtually every automaker needs to recall vehicles from time to time. But the recent recall of over eight million Toyota automobiles worldwide is being called the largest in U.S. history.
The recall fixes ill-fitting floormats and sticking gas pedals to stem the tide of horrific accidents due to sudden acceleration where cars sometimes reach 80 to 100 mph despite frantic driver efforts to slow them down. This auto defect caused over 100 deaths, hundreds of lawsuits, and millions of dollars in property damage, not to mention pain and suffering.
Toyota models included in the recall
Pursuant to laws like the National Traffic & Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966, manufacturers are required to voluntarily recall defective vehicles for repair at no cost to their owners.

Not just Toyota
All in all, 110 fatalities are attributed to sudden acceleration accidents. But they are not all attributed to Toyota. Ford and Daimler Chrysler also had their fair share of sudden acceleration fatalities as well as massive product recalls. Addtionally, the Audi 500 sedan has been linked to sudden acceleration problems.
Automakers drag their feet on executing product recalls because they are very costly. Besides the expense of replacement parts and labor, companies also sustain damage to brand reputation, sales, and stock prices. If sudden acceleration problems continue, automakers may possibly have to develop an emergency shut off switch or improve the safety of cruise control and electronic throttle control systems.
In a statement posted on the Toyota website, Toyota President Akio Toyoka said, “We pursued growth over the speed at which we were able to develop our people and our organization. I regret that this resulted in the safety issues described in the recalls we face today…”
