President Obama was in Texas last week to offer his thoughts on comprehensive immigration reform. One part of this reform is the implementation of an amnesty program.
Many would agree that our immigration system currently suffers from some major problems. Most can agree on the problems. It is the solutions on which many disagree.
Many pundits and Washington insiders believe that the President’s recent speech in Texas supporting an amnesty is a lot of hot air for the simple reason that where things stand now, the Republican Congress will not go along. Because they see adoption of an amnesty at this moment as an unrealistic goal, some accuse President Obama of demagoguery for pushing it.
What disturbs me about the renewed amnesty talk, whether it is a realistic possibility or not, is that already many hucksters have used the President’s speech to solicit uninformed or na¿ve persons into paying them for services that they claim will lead to achieving legal status. Innocent people are being duped by the promise of acquiring something that at this point in time seems to be a long shot. So reader, please beware. Maybe there will be comprehensive immigration reform this year or the next. But don’t bet on it. And be very careful about forking over your hard-earned money to anyone who promises you that amnesty is just around the corner.
The best thing you can do now is to keep your eyes and ears open and tuned to the news. Follow the amnesty debate carefully. And if you are undocumented and praying for an amnesty, maybe your prayers will be answered.
