Some large law firms take cases on a pro bono basis as well as some of the area law schools such as Northwestern University. Of course, individual attorneys do take cases on a pro bono basis.

The Office of the State Appellate Defender handles the vast majority of criminal appeals for those who cannot afford to hire private counsel. Its number is 312-814-1447. Its web link is http://www.state.il.us/defender/.
