Prepare to Meet with a Lawyer Video Transcript
You've made the decision to meet with an attorney. It's a big step! Now, you need to prepare for that meeting, but you're unsure how to begin the process. Follow these simple guidelines before you walk into the attorney's office. It will take time on the front end, but will make for a more productive meeting - and can actually save you money, down the road.
So, where should you begin? First, make sure the attorney knows how to reach you. Give them your:
- Home and work addresses
- Home and work phone numbers
- Cell phone number
- Fax number
- Email address
Next, you should prepare a factual summary of why you've decided to meet with an attorney. If you're starting a new business, you'll want to bring your business plan. If you've been in a car accident you'll want to bring the names of the drivers involved, any witnesses, the exact location and any other relevant information.
Whenever possible, be sure to give your lawyer accurate dates. It's not only important to note when key events happened, but when you received any notices or other documents that are critical to your case.
Then, you should gather all the documents you have that pertain to your matter. Examples include:
Contracts
Photos
Accident reports
Witness statements and
Completed attorney questionnaires
Make copies of all documents, put them in a folder, and bring them to your initial consultation. Keep the originals in a safe place.
Don't forget to bring a list of your own questions to ask the attorney. If you're unsure what to ask, find examples on lawyers.com. Remember, there are no dumb questions.
Finally, make sure you schedule plenty of time to meet with your attorney. You will want to have enough time to thoroughly discuss your problem, the goals you hope to achieve, and all available options.
If, during your initial discussions, you discover a conflict of interest or, you simply are unhappy with the attorney you've chosen, you'll need help finding a replacement in your area. Where should you go? Visit the "Find a Lawyer" section on lawyers.com.
