Peer Review Rated for Ethical Standards and Legal Ability

Independent Review Process

LexisNexis Martindale-Hubbell's Peer Review Ratings evaluate lawyers in the U.S. and Canada through an independent review process. These Ratings serve as an objective tool to attest to a lawyer's ability and professional ethics, and reflect the confidential opinions of other lawyers and judges who have worked with the evaluee.

In Use For More Than a Century

For more than a century, lawyers have relied on these Ratings to provide them with objective evaluations of other lawyers. The legal community values the accuracy of these lawyer Ratings because they are determined by their peers. Now consumers may leverage the same Ratings as a tool to better evaluate the ethics and experience of lawyers.

Practice Experience Required

A lawyer will not be Rated until he or she has a minimum of three years' experience; the Rating is influenced by the length of time a lawyer has been practicing. There are currently 325,313 practicing lawyers who are Rated in the U.S. and Canada.

General Ethical Standards and Legal Abilities

Ratings are made up of two categories: General Ethical Standards and Legal Ability:

  • The General Ethical Standards Rating denotes a very high adherence to the principles of conduct and ethics mandated by the legal profession, as well as to its standards of reliability and diligence. The General Ethical Standard must be met in order to receive a Peer Review Rating.
  • Lawyers are graded on their legal ability based on the standard for their practice area, their expertise, the nature of their practice and other professional qualifications. Only those lawyers who have received the highest rating in General Ethical Standards may qualify to receive a Legal Ability Rating.
  • Peer Review Ratings signify a "seal of approval" for the General Ethical Standards and Legal Ability of a lawyer as judged by his/her peers.

LexisNexis Martindale-Hubbell's lawyers.com is the leading lawyer directory on the Web, providing access to more than 440,000 attorneys and law firms nationwide. More than one million searches per month are conducted at lawyers.com by consumers and business people in search of the right lawyer for their needs.
