Meet with a Lawyer Video Transcript
You have a legal issue and you've decided to talk to an attorney. How can you get the most from your initial consultation?
First, make sure you're as prepared as possible before you walk into the attorney's office. Bring along:
- All relevant documents and diagrams that pertain to your matter.
- Have a list of your own questions to ask the attorney. If you're not sure what to ask, go to lawyers.com for a list of the most significant questions.
Next, treat your consultation like a business interview. Make sure to:
- Arrive early so that you'll have time to relax and compose your thoughts.
- Be sure to allow the attorney to lead the conversation. Not only does it give him or her a chance to get to know you, but it will provide relevant background information pertaining to your matter.
- Always be honest and forthcoming. It's in your best interest. And, because your meeting is subject to the attorney-client privilege, you don't have to worry about your privacy being violated if you decide not to hire the attorney.
If you select this attorney to handle your matter, they should:
- Educate you on the legal process pertaining to your matter.
- The lawyer will propose alternatives, the consequences of each, and advise you on how to move forward.
- Finally, you should receive an agreement outlining the attorney's charges. If you decide to retain the attorney, find out what your next steps are, including any information you need to provide, as well as when and how you should communicate. Remember, your attorney will expect your complete cooperation.
If you don't feel comfortable with the lawyer after your first meeting, you will need to find another. Visit the "Find a Lawyer" section on lawyers.com to locate an attorney in your area.
